A head-on collision on Highway 1 on Vancouver Island has left one woman dead, the Shawnigan Lake RCMP says.

The crash occurred on Saturday, south of Mill Bay, when two vehicles collided head-on.

Mounties say that the crash caused one vehicle to go down an embankment, while the second vehicle caught fire.

“There were at least four occupants involved in the crash,” the Shawnigan Lake RCMP said.

“One woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

The health conditions of the other three occupants have not been revealed.

The investigation of the incident is ongoing with the support of the BC Highway Patrol Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (CARS) team.

Since a section of Highway 1 remains closed in both directions while emergency responders and investigators remain on scene, police are asking the public to avoid the area.

Additionally, any witnesses of the crash are asked to contact the Shawnigan Lake RCMP.
