Abbotsford Fire battles blaze in Costco parking lot after reports of EV explosion

The Abbotsford Police Department says the main entrance of the Costco parking lot was closed Saturday afternoon due to a vehicle fire.
According to police, the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) was called out to the store, located at 1127 Sumas Way, just before 1:30 p.m. after reports of an electric vehicle explosion.
“Crews arrived to a fully engulfed vehicle and were able to put out the fire quickly through the use of fire blankets and water, minimizing the spread to other vehicles,” City of Abbotsford communications manager Aletta Vanderheyden told 1130 NewsRadio.
“To ensure the safety of individuals surrounding the area, the fuel station has been temporarily closed and is expected to open again shortly.”
A picture shared by the AbbyPD shows the vehicle appears to be a white pickup partly covered by a tarp with burn marks above the wheel well.
“AFRS is expected to remain on scene for an extended period to fully extinguish the fire and ensure safety,” police posted just before 3:30 p.m.
“Please anticipate significant delays in the area.”
No injuries have been reported.
We have reached out to the AbbyPD for more information.
Vanderheyden says the cause of the fire is under investigation.
