Abbotsford teens in trouble after joyride ends in crash with delivery truck

A group of teens got into some hot water this week after a joyride in Abbotsford ended abruptly Wednesday.

Sgt. Paul Walker with the Abbotsford Police Department tells 1130 NewsRadio that a FedEx driver called just after 12:30 p.m., saying his truck had been hit head-on by a grey Honda Civic.

The driver says six or seven teens got out of the car after the crash and ran away.

Police say the Civic was registered to a parent of a student at a nearby high school.

“It was determined that the student had given another student permission to sit in the parked vehicle during lunch,” Walker said.

“However, that student took the vehicle without consent and went on a joyride with several friends, ultimately resulting in the crash.”

He says AbbyPD’s Youth Squad officers are working with the school to deal with the students since this crash happened during school hours and the joyride began on school property.

The youth’s parents have been notified.

“This is a good reminder for people that vehicle owners are ultimately responsible for the use of their vehicles,” Walker said.

“In this case, while the owner’s son had good intentions, leaving the vehicle unattended allowed others to misuse it.”

No injuries were reported, he says.
