Downtown Vancouver Costco to require membership for food court

It’s a go-to before a game at Rogers Arena or when you need a cheap meal, but soon not just anyone will be able to get a bite to eat at the Costco in downtown Vancouver.

New signs posted at the store say that starting Aug. 5, a membership will be required to access the fast-food counter.

The location’s food court — reportedly the only one in the country that is accessible from outside — has the classics like pizza and fries. But the long-time main attraction is the hot dog-and-drink combo, which goes for just $1.50 before taxes.

The Leader Spirit spoke to a number of people outside the store who say they don’t mind the change.

“Definitely if there is an event at Rogers or BC Place, it can get pretty busy,” one said. “You can wait 20, 30 minutes just for your order. I can see why they want to control that.”

But those not part of the Costco club are disappointed to hear about the crackdown.

“I don’t really agree with it, not really nice,” Trevor said.

“Everybody needs to eat.”

It’s not clear if the change will be seen in all stores across Canada. Last year, some U.S. locations restricted food court access to members.

Costco memberships start at $65 plus tax per year.

Those not willing to pay up have two more months until their last downtown Vancouver Costco meal.
