Kitsilano Pool opening postponed

Hang up your noodles, Vancouver — the city says Kitsilano Pool won’t open in time for May long weekend.

Last week, the City of Vancouver announced that it’s goal was to open the popular saltwater pool later this month.

In an update Wednesday, the city says it is now expected to open “in mid-June” due to newly identified pool infrastructure issues.

“We recognize that the pool holds a special place in the hearts of Vancouverites as an iconic facility, synonymous with summer. Staff are working hard to complete the necessary work and are committed to providing timely updates as progress continues,” said a city statement.

“Kitsilano Pool is more than 50 years old and in its end-of-life phase which means annual maintenance and potential repairs will continue to be necessary.”

Last year, the pool was only open for one month after undergoing $4 million in repairs.

At the time, Mayor Ken Sim said the closing of the pool was a “disappointment shared by the entire city.”

“But we didn’t give up. We knew we couldn’t lose this beloved asset,” said Sim in July.

He explained that repairs were intended to extend the pool’s life by another two years while plans for a new facility get underway.
