The freshly sworn-in federal government includes five MPs from B.C.

Three of these MPs have their ridings in Metro Vancouver — including former Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson who has been named housing and infrastructure minister.

Apart from Robertson, there is Delta MP Jill McKnight and Randeep Sarai, MP of Surrey Central. While McKnight will be working as the new Minister of Veterans Affairs, Sarai has been named as secretary of state for international development.

The other two B.C. MPs who have joined the cabinet are Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke MP Stephanie McLean and Stephen Fuhr of Kelowna. Both have been named secretary of state, McLean’s portfolio is seniors, and Fuhr’s new responsibility will be the defence procurement.

However, North Vancouver-Capilano MP Jonathan Wilkinson will not return to cabinet. He used to be minister of energy and natural resources in the previous cabinet under Justin Trudeau and was also responsible for environment and climate change for about two years.

Learn more about the cabinet members:

Gregor Robertson was mayor of Vancouver for almost 10 years, from December 2008 to November 2018. After winning the municipal election in 2008, he repeated his victory in 2011 and 2014, before he decided not to seek reelection in the 2018 election.

Under his leadership, Vancouver hosted the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, for which City Hall and City Council approved temporary bylaw changes expiring after the Games ended.

One year later, his administration had to deal with the Vancouver Stanley Cup riot and its aftermath, for which some media outlets used the term Robertson’s Riot.

To the indigenous community, he is known for marching through the city in support of indigenous rights in 2013 and for declaring Vancouver to be the first “City of Reconciliation” a year later. In this year’s election, he was elected as MP for Vancouver Fraserview—South Burnaby with more than 52 per cent of the votes.

Jill McKnight won the riding of Delta with more than 51 per cent. She is a graduate from the University of Victoria, holding a Bachelor’s degree of Commerce in Entrepreneurial Business. She used to be a Executive Director of the Delta Chamber of Commerce before entering politics and is a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal.

Randeep Sarai has been an MP for Surrey centre since 2015, winning his riding with almost 48 per cent in this year’s elections. He grew up in Burnaby and has a Bachelor’s degree of Laws from Queen’s University in Ontario and has practiced at a local law firm before entering politics. It is his first cabinet position.

Stephanie McLean was born in Calgary and has a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Calgary’s law school. Her first political position was Minister of Status of Women in the Alberta provincial government from 2016 to 2018.

She won her provincial riding in 2015 Alberta’s general election as a candidate of the Alberta New Democratic Party. Her tenure there was marked by the birth of her son, being the first Alberta MLA to give birth while in office.

Before being elected as an MP for Esquimalt—Saanich—Sooke, she had moved to B.C.

Stephen Fuhr is now in his second non-consecutive term as a MA from Kelowna. After losing his reelection bid in 2019 against a conservative candidate, he tried again in 2025 and won against his former political opponent by a small margin of just under 1,070 votes.

During his first tenure in Ottawa, he was the Chairman of the Standing Committee on National Defence.

He is a trained fighter pilot and reached the rank of a Major during his 10 year service with the Royal Canadian Air Force and has worked in the private industry as CEO of an aerospace and satellite communications company.
