Wildfire located near Squamish

The district of Squamish is reporting a wildfire east of Highway 99.

The district says in a statement that firefighter crews are working to extinguish the fire.

The Squamish Fire department is assisted by the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).

“We provided an initial attack crew, a response officer, and two helicopters. All are assisting on scene now,” said Gordon Robinson for the Coastal Fire Center at the BCWS.

Additionally, 20 firefighters from Pemberton zone and an air tanker group are on their way.

The fire is 5 hectares in size, and considered out of control.

The fire is between Dowad Drive and Depot Road in Squamish.

Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area.

They are also asking to not stop on the highway to view the fire, “as this poses other significant risks.”
