A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for the family of a four-year-old boy who was struck and killed in a transit bus accident in Horseshoe Bay Wednesday.

The accident happened right outside the BC Ferries terminal, located at the corner of Keith Road and Bay Street, around 3:30 p.m. At least three people were hit by a bus when it appeared to have jumped a curb. The boy died at the scene. His mother and a family friend were taken to hospital in critical and stable condition, respectively.

According to the campaign page, posted online by Theresa Morrison, the family members are Canadian citizens originally from Brazil. They now face the difficult choice of whether or not to bring the boy’s remains home to Brazil for burial — if his mother’s condition allows — or to bring family to Canada to say goodbye, Morrison said.

“Beyond the physical trauma, there will be the overwhelming emotional toll of losing her only child,” the campaign page says.

“Her care and rehabilitation will require extensive, specialized support as she works to regain both her physical ability and her sense of purpose.”

The funds from the GoFundMe will go toward funeral and transportation costs, travel costs for extended family, medical and rehabilitative care for the boy’s mother, and support for his father and others affected.

As of 2 p.m. Sunday, the campaign had already raised over $4,000 more than its $25,000 target.
