What to do if you see a seal on the beach

Have you ever encountered a lone seal at a beach and did not know how to best handle the situation?
The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society (VAMMR) has the answers in a new video as part of its “Be Seal Smart” campaign.
It’s all about guiding you on how to properly help lone seals you might encounter on B.C. beaches this summer.
The video explains three simple, but it says are crucial steps to follow when spotting a seal.
- Hands Off, Paws Off!
It might be tough, but do not approach, pick up, feed, or try to return the animal to the water.
In Canada, it’s actually against the law to disturb marine mammals. You should never try to rescue a marine mammal on your own – you could unintentionally cause harm to the animal or yourself.
- Give Them Space!
Keep a safe distance from the seal. If the animal reacts to you, you’re too close — back up!
Make sure to keep other people and pets away too. Remember, the seal might just be taking a nap. And if it is a pup, its protective mother is likely foraging nearby.
- Make the Call!
The rescue facilitiy says your most important action is to call VAMMR’s 24-hour hotline at 604-258-SEAL (7325).
Provide as many details as you can about the seal and your exact location. Even if you are not sure if the seal needs help, it is always better to report it.
It says you can also contact Fisheries and Oceans Canada at 1-800-465-4336 to report a marine mammal disturbance.
